"James Marke Wood, the Liverpool shipping line owner, (his father was also called James Marke Wood) married Agnes McCrae (who funded the building of a wing of the Anglican Liverpool Cathedral) and was the father of Rosamond, Contessa di Sant'Elia (born in 1881 as Esther Rosamond Marke Wood). From The Times of 25 Jan 1965:

CONTESSA DI SANT' ELIA
Contessa di Sant' Elia, widow of Comte [sic] Luigi Arberio Mella di Sant' Elia, sometime court Chamberlain to the King of Italy, died yesterday [24 January] at her London home.

Her colours, cerise with white hooped armlets, were well known on the racecourse. Lately Antiar probably has been her most successful horse, but undoubtedly her best was Halloween, a winner of 17 steeplechases, including the King George VI Chase twice. More important, Halloween had a remarkable series of near misses in the Gold Cup being second twice and third twice. Contessa di Sant' Elia had horses training with P. Cazalet and earlier with W. Wightman. She was born in 1881, Ester Rosamond, the daughter of James Marke Wood of Liverpool.
